Oxenden Road and The Street: Improvement works and road closure information

Oxenden Road:

Oxenden Road will be closed from Monday 12 February for 5 days, with the road being closed overnight,to facilitate the construction of a speed cushion and kerb buildout.

Oxenden Road will be closed between Tongham Meadows and The Moors, and a signed diversion will be in place.

Buses serving Oxenden Road will follow an alternative route during these works, and bus stop suspensions will be in place from 12 February until 16 February.

Access for businesses and residents living on the road will be maintained when it is safe to do so.

Please talk to a member of our staff on site if you need help – talking to our staff can solve most issues.

The Street:

The Street will be closed to through traffic at the priority give way system near to the Manor House Flats from Monday 19 February to Friday 23 February, between the hours of 9:30am and 4:00pm.

The Street will be open to traffic outside of the above hours.

This is to facilitate:

• the resurfacing of the road on the approach to the priority give way system

• the laying of a new buff-coloured strip of road to improve visibility of the priority give way system

• repair work

• replacement of road markings

A signed diversion route will be in place and access for businesses and residents will be maintained but may be via the diversion route.

Works update – Oxenden Road and The Street

Delay to works on Oxenden Road

A gas leak was discovered along Manor Road late on Friday 20 October, the week before half term. This resulted in Manor Road being closed for the majority of half term (23 to 27 October), with traffic diverted via Oxenden Road. Due to the gas leak and necessary road closure, we were unable to close Oxenden Road and had to wait for Southern Gas Networks to complete the repairs to their gas main. They did not finish this work until Friday 27 October, therefore this left insufficient time for us to undertake the works on Oxenden Road.

We are looking to rearrange the works in Oxenden Road for a future school holiday period in early 2024. No date has been confirmed as yet, but nearer the agreed programme date, advance warning letters will be delivered to local residents and our website will be updated.

Works left to complete on The Street

Since installing the three road tables in The Street the weather has not been dry enough to apply the permanent road markings to the new road tables and on the approaches. Our contractor has programmed these works to hopefully take place this week subject to weather.

Update on works on The Street

Tuesday 17th October

Works are progressing well, with works on The Street due to complete this week to schedule. Lots of work was underway today with induction loops being installed, asphalt being laid, and excavation and preparation of the ground for installation of the first speed table.

Residents are being assisted by the on-site team and are encouraged to speak to them if they have any requirements, and their patience during the disruption is appreciated. Next week, the contractors will move onto Oxenden Road, with The Street reopened to through traffic.

Tongham improvements to start Monday 9 October - road closure information

Works to improve road safety on Oxenden Road and The Street will begin on Monday 9 October. The works on Oxenden Road include construction of a speed cushion and kerb buildout and the works on The Street include construction of three speed tables, improvements to the pedestrian crossing adjacent to Manor House Flats, and installation of no parking signage.

Due to the type of works being constructed The Street will be closed from Monday 9 October, for approximately 2 weeks, 24 hours a day.

Oxenden Road will be closed from Monday 23 October, for 5 days, 24 hours a day. There will be a signed diversion route in place at all times during the closures. Buses serving Oxenden Road will follow an alternative route during these works and bus stop suspensions will be in place from 23 to 27 October.

Access for residents living on The Street and Oxenden Road will be maintained when safe to do so. Please talk to a member of our staff on site if you need help – talking to our staff can solve most issues.

Comment on proposed parking changes in The Street, Tongham

In July we shared that a public consultation on the introduction of traffic calming measures in Tongham was open. The period during which residents and interested members of the public may make any observations, or formally object to, the proposed traffic calming measures expires on 28 August 2023.

In connection with the proposals referred to above, a related public consultation on a traffic regulation order (TRO) to make changes to parking along The Street is now live. The TRO consultation proposes a prohibition on driving and parking of motor vehicles on the footway and verge areas on a length of the east side of The Street, Tongham. This extends from the southern property boundary line of number 39 northwards to a point opposite the northern kerb-line of Grange Road. This consultation closes on 6 September 2023.     See updated plans for phase one Tongham road safety improvements

    In March 2023 we shared plans for the first phase of planned improvement works in Tongham. The plans outlined changes to The Street, including the introduction of a series of raised tables, improvements to the uncontrolled pedestrian crossing point north of the Manor House flats and a footway parking ban. The plans also outlined changes to Oxenden Road including road narrowing and the addition of a speed cushion. Since sharing these plans some minor changes have been made, including the repositioning of a speed cushion and changes to the drainage.     The update shared in March also included information on proposed works to reduce vehicle speeds on Poyle Road – due to some changes to the plans for Poyle Road, it is now intended that these works will be delivered alongside the second phase of improvements in Tongham. This phase of the scheme is being designed in line with feedback received from engagement with residents last year and we will share plans at a later stage once they have been developed.

    Comment on traffic calming proposals in Tongham

    A public consultation on the introduction of traffic calming measures in Tongham is now open. These measure form part of the improvements to road safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists in the village. To comment on the traffic calming proposals please complete the Surrey Says survey.
